Xbox One Update / Hot Fix Information

Skill-based Matchmaking SBMM has, without a doubt, consistently been one of the most controversial topics in the Call of Duty community. Because answering SBMM-related questions could risk compromise the likely complex algorithms at work, Call of Duty developers rarely publicly comment on specifics. TheXclusiveAce and Drift0r pooled their efforts to play across six accounts in different skill brackets and record the data in a massive doc. Each one alternated between three accounts; one on the low-end, another average, and one extremely competitive. To perform this test, both recorded the stats of the players they ran into, as well as the connection quality ping to the servers hosting these matches. To avoid the inconsistencies of the in-game ping tracker, the pair used Netduma routers to directly ping the host server. Their findings were illuminating. First, neither have found any evidence that matchmaking assigns higher priority to player skill over ping to server. In all cases, players were arranged first based on connection, then on skill level. This dispels one common misconception about SBMM.

With some of the most refined and addictive gunplay in any FPS on the market, excellent weapon progression, and constant support from the developers, the game’s longevity will continue for a good while yet. From broken spawns to maps that encourage camping, issues with the design of Modern Warfare have plagued players since launch in one way or another.

However, issues like this aren’t unusual for even the most successful multiplayer games, and in most cases, the developers have made strides to improve Modern Warfare through updates, patches, and various nerfs. Some issues like camping will take a lot of time and deliberate design choices to remedy, but the current problems with skill based matchmaking are hard to pin down. Skill based matchmaking has been a major complaint in Modern Warfare and plenty of other competitive games, but as other major player grievances get attention, skill based matchmaking has seen disturbingly little developer concern.

Part of the issue is that the problems with SBMM are hard to quantify, as the exact way that the game places players in lobbies together is a mystery known only by the development team. However, now that the game has been out long enough some of the mysteries of matchmaking have become more clear, and solutions can be considered. Skill based matchmaking is a system that attempts to gauge individual players’ skill and place them in matches with other players at the same competitive level.

SBMM systems in various forms have existed for years in all sorts of multiplayer games, and finely tuned SBMM systems are part of what made Call of Duty online multiplayer successful in the first place. A perfect SBMM system would ensure that every match would always have each player on each team at the same skill level. This would, in theory, make for a perfect, intense match every time. If a player started to learn how to improve their performance , they would win more matches and soon enough be placed in a higher skill tier where they would be evenly matched again.

A system like that is practically impossible, however, so good SBMM systems typically look a bit different.

Playlist-based Matchmaking is crap.

A Private Match is a player-defined variant of standard Game Modes. Private matches essentially allow players to play with their friends in customized variants of the standard in-game game modes. Before Call of Duty: Black Ops , the customization options were very limited, mostly only being able to customize things like what map was played on, the time limit, the score limit, number of lives, and a few other details. Black Ops introduced more customization with being able to set up pre-set classes the players must use, the ability to change things like movement speed and resistance to damage for these classes, as well as the ability to customize perks.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II also introduced the ability to play with bots in custom match alongside friends, if the player desired , allowing the player to basically play by themselves instead of having to wait for friends to join. In multiplayer private match, playing does not count towards the player’s rank or statistics.

“There is not skill-based matchmaking in any of the larger player count modes of Modern Warfare.” So no SBMM in Warzone.

Epic is removing a controversial “legacy” aim assist mode for Fortnite players who play using a handheld controller. The move is the company’s latest effort to improve competitive balance between controller users and players using the increased speed and precision of a mouse-and-keyboard setup. Around the same time, Epic also made a significant update to its controller settings , allowing players to tune the game’s analog stick sensitivity in a number of ways.

Importantly, that September aim assist update “removed the ability to use target snapping aka ‘Left trigger spam’ ,” as Epic put it. This is a reference to controller players repeatedly tapping the L2 button to snap their aiming reticle to an opponent. While “left trigger spam” was officially removed with the new aim assist options in September, Epic has allowed players to continue to use the old system by choosing to “use legacy look controls” in the settings menu.

That option will finally be removed on March 13, Epic announced over the weekend , citing “improvements we’ve made to aim assist” as the proximate reason. Players using the legacy options will have a week to copy their controller sensitivity settings over to the “linear” or “exponential” aim assist profiles, which use what Epic says are more accurate and balanced algorithms. But the issue has taken on new salience in recent weeks as a number of sample videos showing how to abuse the setting have spread on social media.

Expectations from those within the Call of Duty community were high for this week’s patch, but it disappointed many, and even included a line, seemingly left in by mistake, that preempted the backlash. But that’s not all. A series of leaks from dataminers and other sources have given us a look at potential new maps and even a first glance at the upcoming battle pass – and Activision has issued copyright notices in a thankless bid to have them scrubbed from the internet.

This week’s patch included a long list of bug fixes, as well as two new Special Operations, one new Classic Spec Ops mission with star ratings, the realism multiplayer moshpit, and the much-loved Gun Game mode. Call of Duty’s core players had hoped for more from the update, however. Current hot topics include the nature of the game’s skill-based matchmaking, spawn location, spawn camping and weapon balance.

The patch addresses none of those things. As we’ve reported, the sound of footsteps in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has undergone some change since the shooter came out. Many players feel their audio level is too loud and gives their position away. For this Call of Duty, which is slower-paced than previous entries in the series and heavy on camping, the sound of footsteps is a big issue.

CharlieIntel reports the patch notes uploaded to Battle. The patch notes stated:: “This is a hot topic in the community, and this is not the change that they were hoping to see. Our core players want to see footstep volume dramatically reduced.

On paper, SBMM intends to place individuals in lobbies with players of relative capabilities. Fortnite bots are in Chapter 2 as Epic Games skips patch notes release

As a whole skill-based matchmaking SBMM is a good thing. By design, it’s supposed to give you fun-but-challenging multiplayer experiences — not one or the other. Back in the old days, before matchmaking was a thing and when PC players were definitely, absolutely, assuredly going to boycott Modern Warfare 2 over it , you’d use a server browser to find a game, you’d jump in and you’d deal with the hand you were dealt.

And if you joined a server where one side was all players rocking the same clan tag, you were usually in for a rough time.
